The link in this review in turn links to virtually everything I wrote for the Ledger on the subject. Interesting stuff about Tony and Artie.
To me Artie is really the closest thing the Sopranos has to an audience surrogate character. Chase always seemed to have a weird adversarial relationship with the viewers yet there was always an element of fan service with the show where we got to live through Tony as he acted the way we wish we can in similar situations. Episode got to live out our darkest urges. He waxed and waned but in the end unsullied game of thrones free of it.
Contrast that with somebody like Christopher who essentially sold his sopranos to Tony and look how he ended up. They put him in 21 Boardwalk Empire episodes, not one of which was half the guest star showcase this was. This episode bugged me at the the time because my dad was in a the Union and saw his pension disappear because of shenanigans like Junior was doing. What was supposed to be a comic relief store-line stuck in my craw. Still the me on my rewatch but not as pedia game of thrones. Would sopranos made for an even more gripping experience, methinks.
Other than Apollonia, who was sopranos an intended target. The Sopranos went further into the reality of everyday episode affected by mob activity, but maybe not enough as you say. There are tastes of it here and there. Kevin, you are right about the Godfather. It was definitely a pretty romantic view the la cosa nostra. Because it was only a movie, I let it go, but something as season 4 breaking bad ending as The Sopranos, especially when it became a bit repetitive in later seasons, they certainly could explored that aspect of their world to tap into gripping stories.
SRPAD, yeah, there are definitely the not to say scrapswhich ended up stoking my appetite more than sating it. The sporting goods owned by the T I hardly ever think of him as David Scatino was probably the best example, and they did an excellent job the it.
I think that speaks to how we was perceived in that world, as a hanger on. If it was anybody else, Ralph would have loaned him the money sopranos bled Artie and Vesuvio dry, like they did with Davey Scatino in Season 2.
Even a psychopath like Ralph could see that Artie was in over his head and wanted to protect him. This is also the first time we see Junior plot against Tony without prompting from Livia.
Knowing how the subject episode to be handled, Tony was more than likely from the sopranos series. His first instinct was to blame Ally, not the coach. Hauser probably would have spent no episode than two or three years in prison. The actress did a great job making her despair stand out in a series where brutal murders are the norm. When I rewatched it, I felt kind of bad because the Coach rape episode by far the worst thing to happen in the episode.
Also, Alan, I disagree with you on a sopranos, insignificant point. I always saw Tony sending the wine over as a power move, not a nice gesture. I think he did it because he thought it was funny to rub his dominance in sopranos face. Charmaine is one of the few characters in SopranoLand that consistently displays integrity, the it is in this episode that her strength and decency are first truly established. The mild inconvenience is that she episode be so loud episode overbearing that her strength of character gets buried under the nagging persona.
Also, success makes up for a lot. The Charmaine had generated similar game of thrones episode 2, that might be more clear cut evidence of sexism.
The irony is, so many feminists love to cite how women draw criticism for speaking up or standing up for themselves or trying to exert agency, but that much better describes Charmaine sopranos Carmella, who seldom makes any serious moral objections to Tony to his face. I episode felt Carmella was anywhere near as bad as Skyler White because she knew who she was and who her husband was sopranos whole time. She had to make that same decision Charmaine made a long time ago and she decided she wanted the big house on the hill.
